Endless Adventure Online officially launches today, August 21, offering an MMORPG that runs directly through a browser without requiring players to install a conventional game client. The game combines automatic combat and offline progression with more traditional online systems including four-player boss raids, guild territories, gathering, equipment refinement and crowded shared cities. That mixture places it somewhere between an idle RPG and a conventional persistent MMO.

Browser delivery could be especially useful on mobile because users can begin playing without surrendering several gigabytes of storage to another application. Characters continue progressing while the user is away, but cooperative encounters still encourage players to return for active sessions. The technical challenge is maintaining responsive multiplayer interactions across widely different browsers and devices while keeping loading times manageable.

A browser game also has fewer storefront barriers, allowing the developer to update one live version instead of distributing separate builds through multiple stores. Endless Adventure is unlikely to replace large native MMORPGs for players seeking cutting-edge graphics, but its frictionless approach makes August 21 an interesting test of whether browser technology can once again become a serious route for mobile online games.
